On November 29, 2023, The Harriet Tubman Monument Project and The City of Newark, NJ, will present the Film Premiere ofBLACK MOSES RISING: Making of the Harriet Tubman Monument in Newark” and “LIBERATION: Poetry Films Inspired by Harriet Tubman“, at The Newark Museum of ArtBilly Johnson Auditorium.

Doors open at 5:30pm for guided tours of the “Seeing America” historical art exhibition at The Newark Museum of Art, and an hors d’oeuvres and beverages reception. The screenings will begin at 7:00pm, followed by a panel conversation featuring the Honorable Mayor Ras J. Baraka, artist/architect Nina Cooke John, Aisha Browne Glover, VP, Urban Innovation at Audible, producer Igor Alves, and moderated by fayemi shakur, Director of Arts and Cultural Affairs at The City of Newark, NJ.

Presented by The Harriet Tubman Monument Project, funded by The City of Newark, Audible, the Mellon Foundation, the State of New Jersey and individual residents in partnership and collaboration with The Newark City Parks Foundation, Newark Arts, The Newark Museum of Art, the Newark Public Library and DreamPlay Media. BLACK MOSES RISING showcases the vision and story behind the transformative Harriet Tubman Monument Project in Newark, featuring “Shadow of a Face”, located in the heart of the new Harriet Tubman Square Park. The film features exclusive behind the scenes visuals highlighting artist/architect Nina Cooke John and her collaborators, the unforgettable unveiling ceremony and powerful insights from key stakeholders. Featuring Nina Cooke John, Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Adebunmi Gbadebo, Noelle Lorraine Williams, Aisha Glover, and more. Produced and directed by Igor Alves. Runtime: 18 minutes. LIBERATION: Poetry Films Inspired by Harriet Tubman

LIBERATION is a powerful series of short films inspired by the legacy of Harriet Tubman, in celebration of the new Harriet Tubman Monument in Newark. The poetry films feature original poems and performances by renowned poets Bimpé Fageyinbo, Margie “Mia X” Johnson, Kween Moore and Jasmine Mans. Directed by Yuri Alves. The Harriet Tubman Monument Project

The Harriet Tubman Monument Project is a powerful celebration of the legacy of abolitionist Harriet Tubman and a touchpoint for the liberation stories of Newark, New Jersey and beyond. The “Shadow of a Face” Monument, designed by Nina Cooke John, is physically centered in the new Harriet Tubman Square Park in Newark.

About Nina Cooke John

Nina is the founding principal of Studio Cooke John Architecture and Design, a multidisciplinary design studio that values placemaking as a way to transform relationships between people and the built environment. Studio Cooke John was recently selected to design the Harriet Tubman Monument in Newark, NJ. The studio was awarded a 2021 AIA Merit Award for the public art installation, Point of Action, commissioned for the Flatiron public plazas in 2020 and currently on view at the Wassaic Project. Nina was named a 2022 United States Artists Fellow.
